It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and son,Vasyl Myastkivskyy.
Vasyl was born in rural Ukraine to a loving family and was raised on a farm. In his childhood, Vasyl spent most of his time outdoors roaming the forests and grazing cattle. It was at this early age that his love and passion for nature was born. At age 14, Vasyl moved away from his family to pursue a career as a forestry technician at Vinnytsia Transport College. Vasyl eventually moved to Kyiv to further his education, obtaining a Master’s degree in forestry from the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine. During his studies he used any opportunity to travel to Russia, Slovakia, the USA, Switzerland, and Germany in order to gain more experience in his field of study. Following his graduation, he worked as a university instructor to start his professional life. It was also in Kyiv that Vasyl met the love of his life, Viktoriya, marrying her in 1997.
Wishing to start a family and seeking opportunity, the young couple moved to Göttingen, Germany in 2001. It was in Germany that both of their sons were born. During his time in Germany, Vasyl worked on forestry research when he and his wife decided to apply for permanent residency in Canada. Prior to settling in Canada, Vasyl, together with his young family, spent three years in Varese, Italy, where Vasyl contributed to forestry research for the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission.
Vasyl and his family of four made the move to Winnipeg, Canada in 2012. With the challenges of adapting to a new country, Vasyl left his profession of forestry and worked a few jobs before taking employment at the Amsted Rail plant in Winnipeg. While off work, Vasyl enjoyed many road trips through Canada and the US with his family, as well as gardening in his backyard or simply having a beer with friends. Vasyl’s favourite pastime was spending time in nature and sharing his passion for it with those around him. He loved walks in the forests and picking mushrooms.
Vasyl was always eager to help anyone, friends or strangers alike. He had a great sense of humour and an optimistic outlook on life that is greatly missed by his loved ones.
Vasyl passed away on March 14, 2025 at Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg and was laid to rest at Brookside Cemetery.
Vasyl is survived by his wife Viktoriya, his two sons Sergiy and Ivan, mother Efrosyniya, and brother Sergiy.
We would like to thank the amazing staff at Health Sciences Centre for their care and support of Vasyl and his family.
