Kathryn Allana Dick passed away peacefully on August 15, 2024, surrounded by her family. She was beautifully unique and will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She was 48.
From birth, Kathryn lived with daily medical challenges. Her Cerebral Palsy meant poor muscle control, lack of speech, and seizures. Kathryn taught those around her valuable lessons about strength, joy, and perseverance. In her final days, Kay received compassionate care at St. Boniface Hospital Intensive Care Unit, but the severity of her seizure disorder proved insurmountable.
Born on March 22, 1976, Kathryn lived her entire life in Winnipeg. She attended school in the St. James-Assiniboia School Division and Sunday School at Broadway-First Baptist Church. Kathryn enjoyed car riding and camping. Over her younger years she travelled by car from eastern PEI to western Vancouver Island. Kathryn had a love for music, beginning in her home church and continuing throughout her life. She delighted in having books read to her, watching animated movies, being sung to, swimming and horseback riding. Her time spent in Disney's enchanting worlds brought her immense happiness. She would laugh just before the funny part that she knew was coming in the movie she had watched and enjoyed so many times.
When Kay was 21, she moved into her adult home. For the past 27 years - her whole adult life - she and her original housemate were lovingly cared for at their St. James home by Epic Opportunities Inc. and their staff. There she had music therapy, helped with household duties, and did crafts with staff, as well as continuing with her activities of books, songs and animated movies. Her 3 big trips came while she was an adult. She had trips to Disney World in Florida, to Disneyland in California and to Vancouver to visit her sister.
Kathryn is survived by her mother, Lynda Dick; her father, Robert Dick; her sisters, Michal-Joan (Mark) Jenkinson and Pamela (Brian) Rempel; her niece, Audrey Jenkinson; and her aunt, Jane Dick. Kay will be missed by her "Aunty" Donna & family, her great-aunt Edie, and her housemate Kaley. She was predeceased by her grandparents, John & Johan Dick and Norman & Hilda Wood, as well as her uncles, Allan Dick and Adrian Valentin, and great-uncle Harold Wood.
A private cremation and interment have taken place. A Celebration of Kathryn's Life will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2024, at 2pm at Whyte Ridge Baptist Church, 2405 McGillivray Blvd. in Winnipeg.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Kathryn's memory to Epic Opportunities, which you can find by using this link, or the St. Boniface Intensive Care Unit c/o St. Boniface Hospital Foundation at this link, or 204-237-2067.
